Wireshark (originally known as Ethereal) is a software application used for packet analysis on networks. Initially released in 1998, it is used to monitor networks in order to see the visible traffic. Wireshark is then able to display the traffic in human readable format with colour codes, and filter the traffic depending on the user’s preferences.

Additional Information

Wireshark is available on all major operating systems (Windows, Mac, Linux).

Wireshark is released under the GNU General Public License.

A terminal version of Wireshark is available, named TShark.
